With less than five weeks to go before the NATO Summit in The Hague, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (NATO PA) met in Dayton, Ohio, United States for its 2025 Spring Session. Over 250 legislators from NATO member states and partners gathered from 22-26 May to discuss the Assembly’s recommendations for the summit.
Whether the current transatlantic rift is real or a myth, the NATO PA clearly swallowed the Trump administration’s criticism (while ignoring the veiled threats to Canada and Greenland) and did everything possible to show that transatlanticism remains on track. In fact, from the statements and news releases coming out of Dayton it would be hard to discern any sense of a transatlantic crisis at all. The NATO lawmakers simply doubled down on existing commitments to ramp up political and military aid to Ukraine, boost military spending and burden sharing within NATO and build closer cooperation with partner countries such as Japan, Australia, South Korea and New Zealand.
