A nuclear weapons-free Scotland, inside NATO?

As a former UK Defence Secretary and a former Secretary General of NATO, George Robertson is well placed to comment about the Scottish Nationalist Party’s (SNP) proposals for a post-independence defence policy north of the border. 

 
Either the SNP accept the central nuclear role of NATO and show that they will shed any principle to buy votes for separatism, or they reject the nuclear role of NATO and ensure that a separate Scottish state stays out of the world's most successful defence alliance.
 
But can the SNP’s “huge dilemma” be reduced to a simple either/or question?  And can one sense a little political opportunism at work by a prominent Scottish member of the Labour Party with a vested interest in denigrating his party’s major opponents?
