Following missile tests by North Korea, war games in Iran and NATO’s unveiling of its defence system, missile defence has returned to the forefront of the Western security agenda. But how real is the threat and what level of protection do we need? Is NATO’s new missile defence system the answer, or an expensive abandonment of ‘smart defence’? With defence cuts occurring all across Europe, will missile defence become the unwanted orphan of the age of austerity? If so, with what unforeseen consequences? Will missile defence continue to be a thorn in the side of Russia’s relations with NATO?
